Grooming nervous dogs

Nervous dogs

Grooming your nervous dog in your own home is the perfect solution. You don’t need to worry if they have separation anxiety, are fearful of other dogs or any other fears. I can come out and groom your dog, going at a rate that your dog finds comfortable. If your dog can only cope with half an hour we can schedule appointments for half an hour every week until the job is finished, it does work out a little more expensive, but is much better for your dog. Grooming like this will help build confidence and make it easier each time I come around. We can build up a relationship saying hello properly first without diving straight into the scary stuff.

Nervous dogs I have been grooming recently

Rosie Cocker Spaniel

Fancy Fidos nervous dogs

The lovely Rosie with one of her pups

a neat and tangle free Rosie

Due to a previous experience Rosie is terrified of being groomed, her owner contacted me to groom her before her puppies were born, but after a discussion to see how nervous she was, we delayed until after the puppies were born. The downside of this was that she did have some serious matts.

The first time I turned up she took a look at the table and started shaking, so I abandoned the table and just started brushing and soothing her on the sofa. I found that she really enjoyed me using the rubber curry brush, which was a great breakthrough. She relaxed enough for me to pop her onto the table and we spent an hour cutting out matts and going back to the rubber brush. It took 3 visits to get her into tip top shape but she is now happy to see me and feels so much more comfortable. Not only was it a good experience for Rosie it was a very rewarding experience for me as well and with an added bonus of puppy cuddles.

Bonnie and Darla

Bonnie and Darla are both nervous dogs, but Darla is particularly frightened of everything. Darla gets herself worked up to a barking frenzy over anything she isn’t sure about,

Fancy Fidos nervous dogs

Darla Yorkie

Little Darla Yorkie

so trips to  a grooming salon must have been very difficult for everyone. Once Darla is on the table she is pretty quiet, if a little trembly, but on my last visit I even got some cuddles from herduring her groom. You don’t always get instant results but with consistency and a good positive attitude it’s possible to make big changes in the long term.

Bonnie gets her groom first as she is a bit more confident than Darla, which I think helps a bit. Bonnie is a Chi-poo and super cute.

Sonny Collie

Lots of people don’t realise how sensitive Border Collies can be, Sonny is one of the sensitive ones. When we booked him in we didn’t realise that there was going to be any problems, but it soon became very obvious that he wasn’t happy with the situation. I’m a great

Fancy Fidos nervous dogs

Sonny Collie

believer in not telling your dog off for growling as it’s a dogs way of communicating with you and should always be taken seriously. I put away the table and we started using up the next days sandwich filling. I managed to get out all the knots and did a serious amount of de shedding and brushing. Not a full groom as originally planned, but ended very positively.

A nice mix of dogs to groom

What a lovely mix of different sorts of dogs I’ve been grooming.

Saphire Border Collie

What a lovely dog. Sapphire has been on a diet and has now reached her target weight. Mum decided to treat her to some pampering. Sapphire had a bath blow dry and a good coat de shedding. After removing all that coat she looked even more slim lined and smelled gorgeous.

Oliver

Lovely to see Oliver again, he gets so hairy so quickly, therefore he needs a new hair do every 8 weeks. His mum likes to keep his coat very short. Oliver is a Bichon cross .

Alfie

Puppy alert, Alfie Schnauzer what a handsome little dog. I like to groom puppies straight away to get them used to the whole grooming process. Therefore I consider this should be part of their socialisation training. This will help them for every trip to the groomers in the future. Also this will help with going to the vets as well, because they are happy to be up on the table.

Lola

The lovely Lola Cavalier, such a sweet little girl. Her owners like to have her clipped very short, which suits their life style. I am happy to groom your dog how you want it, not just to breed standard, your dog your choice.

A nice mix of dogs to groom

I love being a dog groomer

It’s so rewarding being a dog groomer, you get to see a wide range of dogs and help them look great, smell great and feel comfortable. Here are a few of dogs I have been grooming;

Lovely to see Poppy Working Cocker Spaniel, Poppy is scared of clippers, so we did a very natural strip and scissor, just a very short intro to grooming session which went really well. Such a sweet girl.

Next up was Florry Bichon Frise, she is such a pretty dog. I used a mix of clipping and scissoring. Florry suffers from a bit of separation anxiety so a low stress environment with her mum there is ideal for her.

Brenji Tiara dog is such a happy dog, he is however a wriggler, but you can’t help love him 🙂IMAG0263

IMAG0271

Isis, the super elegant Shetland Sheepdog, just needed a wash blow dry and a little tidy up.

IMAG0273 IMAG0277

Bella Cocker Spaniel came in a very hairy young lady, so she got the full works. She still likes to look like a Spaniel though so a clip and scissor leaving feathers on her. In true Spaniel style, she came in with twigs in her ears 🙂

A bunch of Border Collies

A Bunch of Border Collies to groom

Just to make a change I’ve had a little run on Border Collies to groom.

First up was Ben, a lovely old Border Collie who was getting a bit smelly, so all he wanted was a really good brush and bath and we didn’t want our photo taking as we were a little bit grumpy and at 16 with arthritis who can blame him. His owners struggle to bath him, as he isn’t keen on the whole clean water thing, so we got him looking and smelling lovely.

Next was Baily & Callie, what gorgeous Border Collies and a delight to groom. Again just a bath, blow dry and this time a good raking out of the undercoat, they were going away on holiday and wanted to look and smell their best. It’s always much nicer to travel with a sweet smelling dog 🙂

Some more lovely dogs that I have had the pleasure of grooming.

Morse the Cocker Spaniel.

dog groomer imag0159 imag0161

Morse Cocker Spaniel wanted a very natural hair do so I didn’t clip him at all. First off a nice shower to get him squeaky clean then lots of scissoring and raking out all his dead hair. Mum asked for a slightly longer chest next time, which I’m happy to do.

This goes to show you don’t need to clip all the hair off to make a dog look good. I think he looks a really handsome Cocker Spaniel after his groom.

Proud to be a dog groomer

Dilly and Chunky

Next up for a doggy spa session, we had Dilly and Chunky, lovely to see the little Jack Russell x Bichons again. They are a perfect example of how different cross breeds can turn out. Their coats are so different, Dilly is much more Bichon, where as Chunky you couldn’t tell there is any Bichon in him at all….

I forgot to take a before photo of Chunky, but you can see him on the floor here

Betty and Bindy

More little siblings, Betty and Bindy, again Jack Russell cross Bichons what a coincidence! Again both have very different coats. You can see Bindy has a very curly Bichon coat, but Betty has very fine silky hair.

Lovely little dogs

Little Dogs I’ve been Grooming

It’s been a week of grooming lovely little dogs. They have all been so good and a delight to groom.

Welcome to Fancy Fidos Arty Cavalier, a little dog with a big smile. Arty wanted a very natural looking groom and his mum was very happy with his smarter look. He was such a delight to groom.

Bichon Crosses

Next little dogs were Bobo and Oliver for another pampering session, they are Bichon crosses that I groom regularly. For Bichons and their crosses its a good idea to get them groomed about every 8 – 12 weeks.

Bichon Frise

I have also groomed some pure Bichons as well this week.

Alice Bichon, what a lovely little dog, absolutely gorgeous but does suffer from separation anxiety.

We went for a very natural look rather than the Bichon breed standard.

Dear shy little Sophie Bichon, she is so timid, she does like a cuddle though. She is such a lovely little dog.

Gorgeous dogs

It was lovely to see young Brenji pup again, Brenji is a Tiara Dog and is a bit of a wriggler, but so handsome (when he isn’t pulling faces).imag0268 20140513_110037 imag0271

Next up was Lilly Norfolk Terrier, she had a good tidy up with a light strip. Stripping is a method for some breeds to keep a nice coarse coat with a good colour. It does take longer than clipping but can make your dog look fantastic and very natural.

Peggy labradoodle had quiet a few matts so we did the best we could. Lovely girl 🙂

Now doesn’t that feel better Peggy

Stan the lovely Labrador needed a spruce up as they were having visitors who are allergic to dogs, so I gave him a good few shampoos and raked and raked that undercoat.

Just look at that face 🙂 imag0063 imag0064

The lovely Quincy poodle came in for a pamper as well, what a dear old boy. A nice little tidy up 🙂

Lovely new customers

I’ve had some lovely new customers, welcome to Fancy Fidos Monty.

Monty had a few matts that needed sorting out and needed a trim around the face. I got him lovely clean and fresh and matt free and looking like he should 🙂

What a face :)

My next new customer was Oscar the Golden Retriever. Oscar only came in for a good brush and a light trim. He has a skin condition and doesn’t like anyone touching his ears. He did need a good rake out of lots of dead hair and because I could spend some time with him introducing myself properly he had no problems with me and his ears, yay!

My next newbie is the delightful Florry Bichon Frise pup. Her first trip her mum just wanted a tidy up, but she was very nervous and we found quite a few matts, we had to change to plan b and she had her first clip. We are going to work on her separation anxiety and nerves with her mum staying for the groom…

lovely cross breeds :)

I had a visit from the lovely Bear Cavapoo, he was a bit bigger than I was expecting I think he must have a standard poodle in him 🙂 Unfortunately Bear had a lot of matts so he had to go short, but he was beautifully behaved. Hopefully we will see him more regularly so we can keep on top of his coat.

Hairy Bear

Next up another poodle cross, this time Ollie Cockapoo. Ollie is just a puppy and just needed his nails, feet and face trimming. For a pup he behaved really well and really enjoyed the experience.

Oliver and Bobo came back for their regular hair do, their mum likes to keep them good and short as she struggles to keep their coats in good condition if they get too long. They normally come to see me every 8 weeks, ideal for keeping Bichon cross coats in order.

Finally on the grooming front we had Sophie and Sparkie another couple of Bichon crosses, starting to feel like I’m becoming a bit of a specialist in this field 🙂 They are related to Bobo and Oliver, what a lovely little family.

I had a lovely evening this week at a tuggie workshop and a group of friends all sat around eating cake and making tuggies for our dogs. We were all delighted at how they worked out. Bella loves hers 🙂

Dilly and Chunky

It’s great to see Dilly and Chunky back here for another groom at Fancy Fidos.

Dilly and Chunky are sibling Jack Russell cross Bichon Frise and have such different coats as you can see. Dilly has a more Bichon type coat and Chunky has a very fine long coat, so not really like either breed. Dilly has bad separation anxiety so John stays with us while I’m grooming them, which makes for a much happier groom for her.
